Mates Of State cover Nico at CMJ 2007

Duo beef up band with new members at Joe’s Pub

Mates Of State cover Nico at CMJ 2007

Mates Of State played the second show of their CMJ run last night at Joe’s Pub in New York City.

The band adopted a new approach for the show, with Kori Gardner on grand piano as opposed to keyboards, as well as the addition of two musicans, the first time the band have played as more than a duo.

Former Bishop Allen bassist Christian Owens joined the band onstage, as did cellist Linnea Weiss, helping to recreate the band’s normally synthesized sounds.

While the set included performances of ‘So Many Ways’, ‘Fraud In The 80s’ and ‘For The Actor’ from last year’s ‘Bring It Back’ album, the duo also performed a cover of Nico’s ‘These Days’, with drummer Jason Hammel emerging from behind his kit to stand for the vocals.

Meanwhile, the band play tonight’s Club NME CMJ Party at Annex, where they will follow sets from Born In The Flood, We Are Wolves and Black Kids.

The band's current tour dates are:

New York Annex (Club NME) (October 18)
New York Joe's Pub (19)
Northampton (MA) Iron Horse (24)
Boston Museum Of Fine Arts (25)
