It’s been a busy weekend (October 20-21) for The Ligger, as we managed to get over British sporting disappointments - as first the Rugby team and then Lewis Hamilton missed out on world titles – by heading to Manchester’s In The City showcase of new music.

The event was the brainchild of the late Tony Wilson and there was plenty going on to honour the Factory Records boss’ legacy.

First up, we spent Friday night (19) in an old Salford mill, watching one of our favourite new bands The Ting Tings playing a secret party into the early hours, with both The Reverend and former Arctic Monkeys’ bassist Andy Nicholson both dancing into the small hours.

We also spotted Arctic Monkeys Alex Turner and Matt Helders chatting to former bandmate Nicholson while watching hotly tipped newcomers - and their friends - The Rascals.

With the city swelling with new bands, it’s more difficult than normal to spot the real bands from the gaggle of wannabes, but we did spy Morgan from Does It Offend You Yeah? knocking back shots of golden tequila shots at the bar in The Studio.

Venturing back from Manchester, we’ve heard news that one of the city’s legends might be set to marry – in London.

Banns for Liam Gallagher’s possible wedding to Nicole Appleton have apparently being published at Camden Registry Office, naming seven dates and eight possible locations where he might tie the knot, with potential venues including Claridges Hotel and Marylebone Town Hall in the capital, and Nunsmere Hotel in Cheshire.

Elsewhere, Razorlight’s Johnny Borrell has apparently been telling the tabs that not going out with Hollywood actress Kirsten Dunst has its benefits, as he’s got more time for running, Amy Winehouse was spotted out and about in Copenhagen and Brett Anderson has apparently being telling people at a party in London that he’ll “never say never” to a full Suede reunion.

Finally, spare a thought for ’Grease’ singer Olivia Newton John who, along with the likes of actor Mel Gibson, had to evacuate their Hollywood homes at the weekend due to wildfires in California.
