Band cancel Athens performance

Depeche Mode frontman Dave Gahan was rushed to the hospital in Athens today (May 12) after reportedly falling ill just before a concert scheduled to take place there.

The band were forced to cancel tonight's performance in the Greek capital as a result.

"We regret today's performance has to be canceled... David Gahan fell ill in his dressing room," a concert organiser told the audience of about 20,000, reports Reuters.

The frontman was suffering from suspected gastroenteritis, with the band's spokesperson saying that the illness is likely to be short-lived and shouldn't affect further tour dates.

The band kicked off their world tour last week (May 6) in Luxembourg.

Depeche Mode will released their new album 'Sounds Of The Universe' on April 20. The band who announced an arena tour last year, recorded the album in Santa Barbara and New York. The record features songs written by both Martin Gore and Dave Gahan, as was the case on their 2005 album 'Playing The Angel'. The album was produced by Ben Hillier.
