Madonna 'still keen to adopt'

Singer makes her statement of intent in African newspaper

Madonna has told an African newspaper she still wants to adopt a second child.

The singer said she wants to provide a home, education and health care to Chifundo James, whose name translates as Mercy.

She made the admission in an email in reponse to questions from the Malawian newspaper the Nation On Sunday. Madonna previously adopted David Banda from Malawi in 2006.

"I want to provide Mercy with a home, a loving family environment and the best education and healthcare possible," she is quoted as saying.

"And it's my hope that she, like David, will one day return to Malawi and help the people of their country."

Her application to adopt was rejected because of a requirement that prospective parents be resident in the southern African state for 18 to 24 months.

But the singer's lawyer has lodged an appeal but no date has yet been set for a court hearing, reports BBC News.
