Metallica beat Glasvegas to Number One

Plus Kings Of Leon knock Katy Perry off the top of the singles chart

Metallica have beaten Glasvegas to the top of the UK albums chart.

The rockers' ninth studio album 'Death Magnetic' entered at the top spot ahead of the Scottish band's self-titled debut, which debuted at Number Two.

In the singles stakes, Kings Of Leon's 'Sex On Fire' debuted at Number One, ending Katy Perry's five-week stint at the top with 'I Kissed A Girl', which slipped to Number Two.

"We're Number One? That sure beats the hell out of being Number Two," Kings Of Leon's Nathan Followill told NME.COM when he heard the news.

Glasvegas' James Allan told NME.COM he never expected to beat Metallica in the album chart battle. See the Glasvegas NME chart news story for the full interview with the singer/guitarist.

The original release date for 'Death Magnetic' was last Friday (September 12). However, the Metallica album was released early, with shops selling copies on Wednesday (September 10).

Elbow's Nationwide Mercury Prize success on Tuesday (September 9) resulted in a leap in sales for their award-winning album, 'The Seldom Seen Kid', propelling it to Number Seven.

Glasvegas would be peaking too early as a band if they hit number one with that album.Anyway, from someone whos had both on all week, Death Magnetic is in my opinion a better album, and more worthy of the number one spot.

thats awesome, I prefer Death Magnetic being a longtime metallica fan. but Glasvegas are deserving of a top 10 spot so well done to both bands

proof if anyone needed it that the death of the album cd is much closer than we all realised. if the biggest metal band on the planet can only shift 75,000 in first week then the industry is on its last legs. shocking.
