Stephen Malkmus and co to head up Primavera Sound

Pavement are set to headline the Primavera Sound festival in Barcelona next May.

The reuniting band will head up the event on May 27 – the first night of the three-day bash. The rest of the line-up is yet to be announced.

Stephen Malkmus and co had already announced three gigs at the London O2 Academy Brixton, set for May 11, 12 and 13. They will kick off their reunion gigs in Australia and New Zealand in March and will curate and headline the All Tomorrow's Parties festival in Minehead, UK in May.

It fascinates me how popular these guys have become in their absence. No one gave a shit about them when they were around. When did this change? They're alright and all, but they really aren't as good as people currently appear to be making out they were. For a start, they were ropey live at the best of times.

onethirtyeight I understand what you're saying (the description on one website described them as 'the best band of the 90s' which is a bit much) but surely the point of this reunion is to make everyone realise how underrated they've been as a band. How many bands have produced 5 consecutive albums of the quality and diversity of Pavement? Not many. Their biggest flaw was also their biggest strength - their willingness to experiment, take risks, let it all hang out. I never had the opportunity to see them live, but I assume this is what you refer to when you say they were 'ropey' - they didn't make it sound exactly like the record and were more about feel than skill. I'm pretty excited about seeing them live and seeing them placed in the upper echelons of 90s bands, even if they aren't REM, Blur or Nirvana.
