Fiery Furnaces' Matthew Friedberger calls Radiohead 'bogus'

Singer gets himself into a case of mistaken identity over Harry Patch single

The Fiery Furnaces' Matthew Friedberger has blasted Radiohead as "bogus" after they released a tribute song about Harry Patch – but it looks like he's got the wrong guy.

Patch, who was the UK's last veteran of World War I, was saluted in the song 'Harry Patch (In Memory Of)', released earlier this year.

"'Oh, please listen to our new song about Harry Patch'," Friedberger said to Spinner.co.uk. "Fuck you! You brand yourself by brazenly and arbitrarily associating yourself with things that you know people consider cool. That is bogus. That's a put-on. That's a branding technique and Radiohead have their brand that they're popular and intelligent. So they have a song about Harry Patch."

Since the interview came to light, the band's publicist has said that Friedberger thought that Radiohead had in fact written a song about Harry Partch, the American composer and custom instrument maker, rather than Harry Patch the war veteran.

"My wife says I am being very rude," the guitarist said in the original interview. "She doesn't like me insulting Radiohead. She's afraid they will send their lackeys through the computer to sabotage us. But they needn't worry, we are a band that sabotages ourselves."

I thought the song was beautiful. As for Friedberger, exactly who the fuck are you?

Oh dear. Perhaps this is why Fiery Furnaces have yet to sell a record. They must indeed be a "band that sabotages themselves" if they can make such stupid mistakes. Writing a touching memorial to a war hero is very intelligent - slagging off the writers of said memorial is not.

What an ill-informed, ignorant moron. He has just exposed himself for the idiot he really is through his sheer ignorance, and the degree of his idiocy has been intensified by the fact that he seems to think he's so clever. No wonder I've never heard of his band, if they're made up of people like this they can't be very good.

A quick google search would have informed him that all the proceeds from the single were donated to the British Legion. Seems rather churlish to accuse them of disingenuous maketing techniques, when they gave all the money away.

Um, I think all those fried burgers have gone to your head laddie. How dare they write a tribute to the last of a landmark generation? Dumb fuck.
