Flaming Lips' Wayne Coyne: 'I don't like Oasis'

Singer also hates Arctic Monkeys, Duffy and Razorlight

The Flaming Lips' frontman Wayne Coyne has said he doesn't like Arctic Monkeys, Oasis, Razorlight or Duffy.

Coyne, speaking to The Daily Star, revealed that he thinks the artists are too British for him to relate to them properly.

"I've never got Arctic Monkeys – they seem too much like a British thing to me. They’re like Oasis whereby Americans can't really relate to them," he said. "Lots of British people like it but not for me, and I don't like Razorlight or Duffy much either."

Coyne said he doesn't hate all British bands though.

"I prefer Radiohead - they deserve to win a Grammy. And I'm still a fan of Amy Winehouse but hope she doesn’t become too much of a drug addict."

Well Oasis and the Arctic Monkeys are better than him ... and his shitty lil band.... i mean Oasis are one of the most popular, and best selling bands of all time, just look at how they sold tickets for their recent tour and the upcoming stadium tours.....

Americans cant relate to them?.. Surely this isnt a case of Americans being ignorant is it?? So what if you cant relate to them. I cant relate to a 40-something bloke whose band dress as rabbits and walk across the audience in bubbles but i still have the ability to like their music

Its because band like the Flaming Lips thinks its cool to make rubbish experimental music. Oasis rule. The bloke from the Flaming Lips is highlighting his insecurities as he knows the UK rules for music. All the greats are from the UK. USA has jack all except wacko jacko! - Bealtes = the past, Oasis=the present, Arctic Monkeys= maybe the future but they'll never be as good as Oasis

Why are Oasis fans so very defensive. If everyone liked Oasis, they'd be as bland and pedestrian as James Blunt, Dido or Keane. Is that what you want? Is it??

I'm Canadian and a massive Oasis fan. There's tons of Canadians that love 'em too.I think it is an ignorant American thing, as opposed to a North American thing.

but Arctic Monkey and Razorlight ARE crap - what? it takes someone with balls like Wayne to express his opinion, if you don't agree with it, so be it. And for the record, the critically acclaimed Glasvegas album did absolutely nothing for me.

Wayne Coyne is a clever clever man. I respect him. I can see where he's coming from - I personally don't like Oasis either, and I'm British. Same goes for Razorlight and Duffy, and Arctic Monkeys are average. He's right about Radiohead - they're much more accessible, they're one of those bands that are unoffensive and consistently great, okay at worst. The Flaming Lips themselves are underrated, especially when we have stereotypical NME readers who are obsessed with Oasis preventing their popularity over here. Surely you should be promoting NEW music, not the same old stuff, i.e. Oasis, who have never experimented with their sound and wrapped themselves in a big ol' musical ennuie. To Mr Coyne - hear hear!

Are people really still using the argument 'The more records they sell the better they are'?!?!?Using that logic Brigzz Barry Manilow, Elton John, The Spice Girls and Cliff Richard etc are all better than Oasis as they have all sold more records than them. Plus Take That have sold more tickets this year than them. Surely we can agree that Oasis are infinately better than all of them, even though they beat Oasis in all the categories you outline as to why Flaming Lips are worse than Oasis. All the greats are from the UK?!?! Come off it sunshine! Otis Redding, The Ramones, Neil Young, Elvis, Muddy Waters, Marvin Gaye, Issac Hayes, Bob Dylan...etcPlus, I love the idea that by not liking a band you are highlighting your insecurities. If anything highlights insercurities it is overacting when someone says 'I don't like a band you love'. So what? Who gives a fuck? If you like what the fuck does it matter what anyone else thinks?

How is this news at all? The Flaming Lips are my all-time favorite band but this just makes him look like an arrogant son of a bitch when he really isn't at all. Blame whoever wrote and posted this article, not Wayne Coyne.

this is probably one of the dumbest things I've ever heard, and odd coming from such a highly revered "art" band. So explain to me Mr. Coyne, how is it that I was born in Cuba, and yet I've always been drawn to Anglo music, in particular, british rock? Should I be listening to Celia Cruz? Do you think I would "get it" more than say The Zombies? Pretentious=close minded=Wayne Coyne...oh and NEWS FLASH: NOBODY cares about the Grammys, except industry types.

The Flaming Lips are hardly a "shitty lil' band" and he's not saying that oasis are bad, just that he doesn't get them. Oasis the present? Don't make me laugh, they've been making the same record for the past 10 years, good in it's day, wank now. Arctic Monkeys are far better lyrically than Oasis ever were, even in their prime (and it should be noted I am a massive fan of Def. Maybe & WTSMG) Flaming Lips are a quality band pushing boundaries, not singing songs that were culturally relevant a decade ago. The US has alot of incredible musicians - Dylan, Buckley et al. Don't get me wrong the UK music scene is still far better in my opinion, but still never write off somewhere that's given us bands like KoL, We Are Scientists & Vampire Weekend recently.

In America your allowed to have an opinion..I like AM, Oasis, and Razorlight but thats me who cares what he likes...he likes pink robots..fucking wankers. Sachin their are pleanty of greats from USA remember Kurt Cobain? Bob Dylan? The strokes...Fucking KOL are better then Oasis..No one can fuck with the arctic monkeys though

I think this is silly. I am American and two of my favorite bands are from the U.K. Wayne Coyne doesn't know what he's talking about.

He's right. Oasis are a bunch of arrogant idiots. They're best selling? So what? I've lost faith in British music consumers, since they continue to give their money to god awful, unoriginal, dull, stupid bands like "Scouting for Girls".Arctic Monkeys are a bunch of arrogant egotistical idiots as well. Beatles/Oasis/Monkeys. That just epitomises your narrow minded opinions. At least the Lips are doing something for music, at least they're actually trying to make music a little more out there. Rather than winging, whining, getting drunk, treating their audiences like shit.Oh and on another note: I wouldn't expect any other kinds of comments from people who are signed up to NME - the tabloid of the music industry.

There go the Oasis lot again lol He doesn't say Oasis aren't any good, he says he doesn't like them, and can't relate to them. People are entitled not to like them you know! And the naivety of the ones who said he was jealous, and that The Flaming Lips aren't as good as Oasis is truly terrifying. You're all part of the reason why the British Music Industry is in the state it's in. It doesn't matter if Oasis ever do anything of note ever again. Their idiot fans will blindly defend them against everything for the rest of their lives.

Notice how Wayne said that he didn't like these bands, not that he thinks they're shit.He expressed his preference and didn't slate anyone.I happen to agree with him though.

Hey Wayne! You're just like me! I can't stand Oasis, Arctic Monkeys and Razorlight either! What do you think of The Flaming Lips? I think they're pretty overrated really. What about you? They did some good stuff a few years back, but since that Yoshimi sub-Sophtware Slump crap they've been a bit shit really. Please tell me you agree Wayne! Lets have a beer!

dear NME. you know that guy who wrote the los campesinos thing in the last issue? can you just let him write the whole magazine please? because the rest of you deserve to be sworn at by steven wells. twice.this is probably the only negative thing wayne coyne has ever said. and comparing his band to oasis is like comparing magic mushrooms to cardboard

I don't get it why everyone is arguing about which band is better?! We are all different and we like different bands. If we liked the same then the world would be sooo boring.

crispin_glover

Dec 17, 2008

Oasis' last album pretty much blows, but I'd still rather listen to that while resting my balls on dry ice than listen to Flaming Lips.

angeLOLhurricane

Dec 18, 2008

'don't get it why everyone is arguing about which band is better?! 'because it is easier than doing something useful and constructive?oasis should call their album 'come on feel the lennonheads' you can use that for next article if you like NME. i dont mind.

Dec 18, 2008

Stardumb, you got it spot on. Both UK and US have great bands, it doesn't matter where you are from if the music you make is great! I mean, come on, Muse are from Teignmouth! Anyone been there and want to stay? And Yoshimi is an awesome, if somewhat weird album. Oasis have a fantastic Greatest Hits, including some of the newer stuff, but lets face it, they've not changed much have they? I mean, what the hell was "Shock of the lightning"?

MartynDavenport

Dec 18, 2008

mswonderwall sums it up quite well "If we liked the same, then the world would be so boring"This is why I don't like Oasis, and pop loving sheep in general lol
