Morrissey and Marr collaborate for Smiths hits and rarities compilation

The pair have both worked on the new release

Former Smiths singer and guitarist Morrissey and Johnny Marr are set to release a compilation of their old band's rarities in November.

Morrissey came up with the title of the compilation – 'The Sound Of The Smiths' – while Marr supervised the mastering of the album.

The album will be available as either a one-disc or two-disc version. The one-disc version contains 23 of the band's singles or would-be singles – including songs such as 'Still Ill' and 'You Just Haven't Earned It Yet, Baby', which were originally intended to be singles but didn't end up getting released as such.

The second disc will contain 22 songs, including rare B-sides and live recordings. Included on the disc are the Troy Tate-produced 'Pretty Girls Make Graves', a cover of James' 'What's The World', and a live version of 'Meat Is Murder', the title track of The Smiths' 1985 UK Number One album.

Both discs will be available to download as well as being released on physical formats.

The full tracklisting of 'The Sound Of The Smiths' will be:

This is what Morrisseys management have to say about this (from true-to-youe.net): "It is understood that Warner Music in London are releasing a Smiths Greatest Hits album in the final quarter of 2008. This release is without Morrissey's approval or involvement."

not too many rarities on there really, but I'll still buy it

Another repackage and STILL no studio version of The Draize Train on CD. Poor show.

There are NO RARITIES on there! buy a cribs record instead for god's sake, morrisey has royally taken the piss out of his fans over the years and some of them lap it up....the last Morrisey record i bought was "oujia board ..." as i thought it was total shite, only trouble is he then carried on releasing shit records and becoming increasingly right wing over the years...perhaps it was the influence of all those skinhead boys he shagged....he is finished, let him go

so this is the cd that was rumoured to be called 'hang the dj'?still anything that shows johnny marr as more than the hired hand with the cribs must be welcomed.that 2 week holiday he wanted sure came back to bite him on the arse....

There was excitement when I first saw the headline on the homepage, but upon seeing the tracklist it's just another repackaging, and the rarities aren't that rare as most people already said. Despite this, The Smiths are still the best band ever! I'll just go back and watch all the real rarities popping up on YouTube!

It's a pretty poor reflection of a label's attitute when their bands have more compilation albums available than studio albums. The Smiths only made 4, but there are at least 5 compilations now. Louder Than Bombs is the only one worth getting.

yeh and elvis still keeps taking the piss ehh, with his new greatest hits, ohh wait a minute he's dead, oh maybe its out of mozz/marr hands, its being released whether they get involved or not, and as new fans are getting into the smiths this is a perfect introduction, if you dont want it dont buy it.

This would be great if you had never heard the Smiths before - if you have, and you already own Luder Than Bombs, then it's Shite...

'buy a cribs record instead for god's sake' --- *sniggers*oh dear.I agree about overkill but your comments aobut firstly the cirbs, then the politics, and finally the skinheads show that you are an idiot.

But the studio albums. Buy Hatful as those are better versions than the John Porter recordings on The Smiths. Buy World Won't Listen for the B Sides and non album singles. Download Jeane. Then buy Rank so you can get an idea of what they were like live and then stop. Simple

We would have been better served with the release of a Clash style singles box set. They apparently do not have any real rarities so lets cash in on some old b-sides and live songs. Pure shit!

in reference to GreshamFlyer's comment. I have the Draize Train on CD. It was on the Rough Trade CD release of the Panic single.

Possibly the most overated British group of all time.Dreadfull dirge.PLUS-another money making exercise. As if one release of this morbid nonsense was'nt enough !!!!!!

Sep 29, 2008

You would have to be a bit gullable to seriously think that morrissey would have ANY involvement in this re release...obviously the work of greedy record companies....and as for the sarky quotes from "paint a vulgar picture" left by various idiots by means of an attack on the genius himself...... you are all eating straight from the NME'S hand. Pat yourselves on the back.

:DDDDDDDDDDDfinally!i LOVE the smiths hahai prolly sound so immature but its times like these i scream like a little girl

Great band and some great music featues, but the memory of The Smiths is being continually tarnished by the actions of Warner Brothers Music, anyone wanting an introduction to the band can get the original studio albums for next to nothing online, surely a legit release of the Troy Tate sessions for the first album with other radio sessions and those b-sides not collected on Hatful/World/Louder would've made a better collection?

Sep 29, 2008

i really hope that they dont reform....i trust johnny marr to not make that mistake.....morrisey is a sad sad figure these days, i have more respect for michael jackson

I just wrote a comment which hopefully won't be posted, I'm getting used to the system of posting on NME!I recommend: A kind of Loving and Thank your lucky stars to anyone who wants some live smiths, and hope that the meat is murder copy is from the former. What's the world (live)( james cover) is brilliant, so look forward to that.

I wish they would of added "Wonderful Woman", I think that is one of their finest tracks.-Mozluv

well it does have 'wonderful woman', which is pretty good, however i'd prefer it if it also had the alternate version 'what does she see in him?' which is probably my favourite smiths song.

sorry meant to write 'What do you see in him?' i should know considering it's my favourite smiths song
