Johnny Marr: 'The Smiths are not reforming'

Guitarist says he's committed to The Cribs

Johnny Marr has declared there is no foundations to recent stories that his old band The Smiths are to reform.

Marr issued a statement to NME.COM saying that rumours floating around that the band were reuniting were "untrue".

He declared: "The stories circulating about a Smiths reunion are, as usual, untrue."

Marr added he was committed to his current band The Cribs.

"I'm currently very excited about writing and recording with The Cribs for a new album to be released next summer and we're playing shows in February, so going back in time isn't in my plans," he said.

I love Johnny Marr, but I have to say he's a total waste of talent, im not saying a Smiths re-union is the best idea but the Cribs???? There absolutely shocking and he doesnt make it any better.

Good. The Smiths are my favourite band ever but I wouldn't want to see this. The Smiths never released a bad record, they never went shit like just about every other band in the world does. Why ruin their perfect legacy?

I agree, Johnny is wasted at the moment. A new Morrisey & Marr project under a new name would be a good compromise.Who willl Johnny team up with next?...I fear the worst, maybe Robbie Williams perhaps? !!!!

although I'm pretty excited by mart joining the cribs. I'm also slightly worried he may ruin one of my favorite bands chaotic sound, both live and on record. A smiths reunion would be awesome, although only if it were for the right reasons. And not just money??? Discuss. Here's to the February cribs dates.........prove me wrong! And make the new tracks as good,if not better than the old cribs tunes!

Exactly Decemboy, reforming just cheapens any groups legacy. Leave well alone , and get working with those Crib brothers....excellent band.

I think Marr's recent projects are much more exciting than any Smith's reunion. Sure the Smiths were awesome but why ruin it like the rolling stones or led zep have. I think it's much more exciting to watch Marr put new exciting records with bands like Modest Mouse and The Cribs. It's the same thing with Albarn, The Good the Bad and the Queen and The Gorillas have been much more exciting and influential than if he had gone on rambling with Blur like Oasis has. I say once you hit it, quit it.

I think a Smiths reunion would be shit, they have nothing to gain from it except money. Why ruin a great legacy? As for The Cribs- they are fucking brilliant and alot more relevant today than a Smiths reunion. People should leave Johnny alone and let him work on projects that still inspire him to still make great music.

I don't mind that he doesn't want The Smiths to reform, but: The Cribs?! Why not Modest Mouse or any other good band?! Why not another Healers album, hahahaha.I fear the worst, maybe Robbie Williams perhaps? !!!!That'd be a good laugh, actually.
