Metallica

Death Magnetic

When exactly did Metallica stop being a metal band for metal fans and become one of the hugest groups ever to stalk the planet? Was it in 1991, when ‘Enter Sandman’ built upon ‘One’’s groundwork and turned the biggest heavy band in the world into a radio/MTV-palatable proposition? Or in 2004, when the world saw the relationship between its creative fulcrum disintegrate in Some Kind Of Monster as drummer Lars Ulrich screamed “Fuuuuuuck!” in James Hetfield’s face while he was still fresh out of rehab? No, it was in 1986 when they wrote ‘Master Of Puppets’ – it just took the world two decades to catch up.

And now, after the misfiring ‘St Anger’, hopes have never been higher. Rob Trujillo is no longer a hired gun(indeed, his bass groove gives the album a pleasingly headbang-consistent rhythm), Rick Rubin’s behind the desk and their recent festival shows have seen an invigorated band with a rekindled love for their own music. And it shows: ‘That Was Just Your Life’ and the phenomenal ‘All Nightmare Long’ are ecstatic explosions of frenzied riffs and insane tempo changes that feel like they’re back in the practice room and daring themselves to push the boundaries of a genre they defined all those years ago.

Hetfield’s bark of “We hunt you down without mercy” on the latter and Kirk Hammett’s acidic solos on ‘The End Of The Line’ and ‘My Apocalypse’ burn with a young band’s hunger, not that of four guys with a combined age of 177, while ‘Suicide & Redemption’ shows their boyish enthusiasm for simply making people rock out. And ‘The Unforgiven III’ – the nearest thing to a ballad here, but still hewn from granite slabs with an orchestral intro that would’ve been suicide in the hands of a lesser producer – is the future soundtrack to a million raised lighters. ‘Broken, Beat & Scarred’, conversely, rumbles like a slumbering leviathan, full of nervous energy that threatens to boil over at any second.

It’s not perfect: ‘The Judas Kiss’ is knee-deep in sludge and could fit snugly on ‘Load’, while parts of ‘The Day That Never Comes’ and ‘Cyanide’ feel, to use Ulrich’s favourite term, slightly “stock”. But with 10 tracks lasting over 75 minutes it’s clear Metallica felt they had a point to prove. And prove it they have: ‘Death Magnetic’ is invigorating, dynamic and truly exciting. Not only does it banish the memory of ‘St Anger’ but it’s easily their best work in 17 years.

Horrible band, they were just upsettingly shite at Reading and Leeds, rock music should never ever be that heavy.

their best work in 17 years? i don't think so.!sure, it's way better then St.Anger, but i sill think that they are going backwards.. the bottom line? nice album, feels like they still have the passion and energy of 25 years old's, and the skills of 40 years old's. yet, i wished for a better album from them.

Do you have a heavy-o-meter by which to judge bands Soundedd? I judge Oasis to be too pub rock with my all new patented pub-rock-o-meter. And I judge Coldplay to be too whiney with my whine-o-meter (which is perhaps why you like 'em). Do you wear ear muffs to concerts just incase things get to heavy/shite and you get all upset? You fans of dad rock crack me up!

You spend your time looking for Metallica-related articles to bash them? That's seriously pathetic. If someone likes Metallica he wouldn't really care whether you do. So stop wasting time on writing biased ignorant comments, you're not impressing anyone.

Too Heavy!?The clue is in the band name "METAL"lica.

thats funny, considering NME gave St. Anger 9 out of 10. Theyre still both good albums. I would have to agree though that Death Magnetic is stronger. But I still love St Anger :D

First of all this review is looked at from a bad perspective. This is a combination of all their works in one. St. Anger isn't banished from memory, because this album has some of st. anger in it. It has Load too. And all of their first great four. Some people will dismiss this album right away for this, but I feel that in a combined state, St. Anger and Load with the first four make a great album. People must give this album a chance, but before they can to that, they must give Metallica one too.

Soundedd, are you joking? Reading and Leeds have had rock and metal bands playing there for ages! How on earth can you say that they are too heavy in themselves and rock music as a whole shouldn't be so heavy? 1. There are heavier bands 2. Metallica are one of the biggest rock bands on the planet and have played Wembley, headlined numerous festivals, so being as heavy as they are is obviously a postive thing.3. What exactly do you class as rock music? I agree with Harby...rock music has all different levels. 4. The most annoying thing you said was that they were shite! Clearly, they put on the best performance of the weekend. Outshone RATM on the day and played a solid 2 hours set with stonking riffs and solos. How can you says such a ridiculous thing. Even if you don't like the band, there is no excuse for the silly comment you made.On topic, great album, big step up from St. Anger. My highlights were All Nightmare Long and Cyanide.

Best band in the world pigloo9? Are you for real? Did you pick that one out of the sky? Theres a band of four liverpool lads that are the greatest band in the world, not this load of shite. Metallica, well I just hate Metal music and can't take it seriously as a genre to be honest. It's just 14-year-old school kids making gay roar noises. When there older and married they won't seriously be listening to drisel like Metallica, Guns And Roses and AC/DC will they? :I Just for a record. FACT and I repeat FACT both Oasis and Coldplay are better than this cow pat of a band.

Soundedd I really don't get people like you. Why do you bother commenting on a band you hate? I don't find reviews of R&B artists just to slag them off. If you don't like metal then fair enough but its the one type of music that has lasted for decades and raked up the most album sales. This is with very little or no airplay. For the record I'm 34, married and have 2 kids and still listen to Metallica, Guns n'Roses, AC/DC etc etc. I also listen to The Beatles, Beach Boys, Oasis and Coldplay when I feel like to name just a few.GROW UP, you sound like the 14 year old here!

Oh dear. I'm not really a great admirer of any of the bands mentioned here - but the only FACT I can see is that Soundedd is a sad dad-rock loving idiot.

NME is a music website. You give your opinions and don't expect to be personally assulted. I have always hated Metal Music and bands such as Metallica and Guns & Roses in perticular thats all. Thats just my opinion. Theres no such thing as Dad Rock, or is that any bands you don't like the sound of "A_Dis"?

Soundedd, I'm a fan of Metallica, system of a down, AC/DC and also Beatles, Oasis, Coldplay etc.....So what's your point? People can like different things, no one's the same, it'd be a boring world if it was. If you dont like a band, dont comment on it...simple as.

i remember a time when the nme ignored metallica or gave their albums 1 out of 10 ( ...and justice for all ), remarking that their prolonged existence is proof there is no justice in this world. so has the nme over the years turned into kerrang? me, i would not buy a record from a group whose singer slaughters animals for a hobby. things like that mattered to the nme in the past too, but that was a more political generation of reviewers.

'never be that heavy' had me in stitches.. and you've obviously gone out of your way to diss metallica, why click on the review to the new album if you know you don't like them? solid album

I was expecting much more from Metallica. They've been doing Death Magnetic for almost 3 years. And where is the music? Somebody said it's like "Master", hell, no! Just listen to 84-86-88! New one is just like old farts trying to step into the same river once again. It's boring. I'd better go and listen to the old tunes. Would give em a credit for trying, though.

There are plenty of bands I can't stand (some have been mentioned here) but I'm not going to go to their reviews and slag them off. I'll live and let live, enjoy what I like and let others derive enjoyment from whatever they like. I'll just point out that even Metallica's worst songs have more complex lyrics, guitar work and drumming than anything by most other major bands.

The fact that you think Guns 'N' Roses are a metal band just shows how pointless your 'opinion' is. There's nothing metal about them.

i admit i wasnt really a metallica fan and never listened to them but i got this album, and its one of the best i've heard all year, i don't put many albums on repeat but this hasn't stopped playing on my ipod lol loving cyanide especially,,and i'm not even a metal fan but we all gotta start somewhere

Ok. Not everyone likes heavy metal. I can live with that. But Metallica are the best metal band there is and probably the best there ever has been. This album should not be judged on what Metallica have accomplished previously or what people expect from them. Just listen to the goddamn music and stop trying to define and rate everything !!!!! I have not heard anything as exhilarating for ages.

For all those slamming metallica. This a loud album, as loud as Metallica can get. You know not actually stuff for the faint hearted. If you don't like them get the hell of this discussion forum. Give some comments on some horrible R&B or Pop album. 10/10 for this album.

When I got the album, the first song I listened was "my apolcalypse"; being the first single, I expected much. During the first 30 sec, I thought the riff was alright; then Lars goes into these St Anger style stupid beats and I thought "Fuck no guys! Don't do that again!". Then, worse, James started to sing and that was it; I thought "ok guys, it's over!". After listening the whole thing, I confirm. It's over. It's full of pointless repetitive riffs to make some "metallica branded" 6-7 minutes songs (10 for Suicide and redemption; one of the worst instrumental I've ever heard. Useless song! We're far away from Orion or the call of Ktulu there!). Through the whole album, James kept that "St Anger style singing". Kirk solos are terrible (it almost sounds like he hits the wrong keys sometimes).I mean, they wanted to do heavy; they are heavy for sure...and so? What's the point if it's not even good. I'm not gonna say that it's great because drums are loud and they push the distortion a level higher! But you know what, I love "the day that never comes" (at least before it turns into a pile of shit
