My Morning Jacket: Off The Record

Relax, it's not as weird as you might think

The way that some people have been talking up the new My Morning Jacket album as a shocking stylistic U-turn you’d think that they’d recorded 45 minutes of Eskimo folk-techno. As it is, all they’ve done is ditch some of the extended guitar solos in favour of off-kilter indie in the vein of The Flaming Lips – admittedly,

‘Off The Record’ succumbs to a sickly reggae lilt, but the way that Jim James’ plangent vocals sound like a sad drunk little ghost and the air of frayed nerves and sleepless nights would make a statue well up. Ace.
