The Shins
Turn On Me
The Shins
There’s a surefire way of telling where a band is from – if it sounds quintessentially English and versed in the idiosyncracies of XTC, Squeeze, Psychedelic Furs and Orange Juice, then you know that they are from America. And so it is with Oregon’s The Shins, whose ‘Turn On Me’ is entirely charming and so English that you could slap some sausages on it and sell it as a breakfast. James Mercer’s delivery is faultless though, by turns lovelorn, arch and impassioned, and it even enjoys an un-English rock-out at the end. Steady on, chaps. Don’t want to wake the neighbours, whatwhat?
